VELO3D
DESIGN FREEDOM IN ACTION
CAPABILITIES VIDEO

Technology leaders can now achieve previously impossible designs and outcomes without compromise.

From software to hardware to complete product support, Velo3D is a fully integrated Metal AM [additive manufacturing] solution that gives designers and engineers unparalleled freedom to create what was previously considered “impossible”. In their quest to unlock tomorrow’s innovations, they enable parts to be printed to exacting standards of consistency, quality and repeatability that hasn’t existed to this degree, until now.

I was approached by Christopher Rundell of Reel Captivation to create an animated capabilities video for Velo3D, working from storyboards that he would provide.

In addition, I was tasked with re-creating identity animations that had been lost from previous work.

Storyboards in PPT

Original AI artboards

Chris sent me his storyboards with brief notes on animations, but I had some freedom in coming up with treatments which I felt would work best. We'd already worked together on projects together, so he trusted me enough to come up with what would look great and simply left me to do the work.

As I started my work, an ongoing consideration was whether or not there would be the inclusion of CAD drawings to multiple portions of the video, which was a decision yet to come. If the drawings were not supplied, I would then be tasked with stylistic animations representing the process of starting with CAD files and finishing with completed printed metal parts. I had to allow time in the schedule to accomodate for this possibility.

As it turned out, CAD filed would not be supplied, and I animated line drawings to repesent this process visually.

The final consideration was making sure that my After Effects project was as organized and easy to follow as possible. There would be several language versions, and it's always good practice to make things easy on the next designer that may be handling your project down the road.

As always, it was a pleasure working with Chris, and this was another one of those super satisfying projects with fun animations that allowed me to geek out on a cool tech piece.
